LEARN CONTINENTAL KNITTING
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS TOTAL
FRIDAY, MAY 7, 6-8PM OR
FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 6-8PM
COST: $20 PLUS MATERIALS (yarn and needles of students choice – worsted weight is suggested)
Want to learn to knit faster? Continental knitting is the way to go! This method involves holding the yarn in your left hand and “picking” the yarn instead of “throwing” it. Make a scarf or something more ambitious, if you’re up to the challenge or have something specific in mind. Some knowledge of knitting and purling is strongly encouraged but not essential.
FAIR ISLE HAT
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU
LESSONS, 4 HOURS TOTAL
FRIDAYS, MAY 21 & 28, 6-8PM
COST: $40 (students must bring or purchase 2 colours worsted weight wool, 5 mm circular needles and 5mm double pointed needles)
Time to tackle stranded knitting! Learn the basics of two-colour stranded knitting (“fair isle”) with a sampler hat knit in the round. Two-handed and one- handed techniques will be covered, as well as weaving vs. floats and following a colourwork chart. See fabulous patterns emerge before your eyes! Skills required: cast on, knit, purl, cast off. Previous colourwork experience not needed, but knitting in the round is an asset!
QUICK TOE-UP SOCKS
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU
2 LESSONS, 4 HOURS TOTAL
FRIDAYS, 2 & 9, 6-8PM
COST: $52 includes 3.75mm double pointed needles. Students must buy 250 yards worsted weight yarn.
Working your socks toe-up is a great way to check fit and use up all your yarn – no leftovers! These quick to knit toe up socks will employ the Turkish cast on and Short Row Heel.
LOG CABIN KNITTING
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS TOTAL
FRIDAY, MAY 14, 6-8PM
COST: $20
Log cabin knitting is an easy, quick way to build beautiful blankets. Learn this simple and attractive method by starting your own blanket – make it as big or small as you’d like! Suitable for beginners. Students should bring worsted weight yarn in several colours and appropriate circular needles.
KNIT A BERET
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU OR NATALIE SELLES
2 LESSONS, 4 HOURS TOTAL
FRIDAYS, AUGUST 6 & 13, 6-8PM
COST: $65 INCLUDES PATTERN AND NEEDLES (5mm circular and double pointed)
Knit a few things and ready for the next step? Knit a slouchy beret! In this class you’ll learn how to knit in the round on circular and double pointed needles, follow a pattern, increase and decrease and block. Suitable for beginners – you just need to know how to knit! Students should bring or buy 200 yards of worsted weight yarn.
KNIT A SHRUG
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU

FRIDAYS, JULY 16 & 23, 6-8PM
COST: $45 INCLUDES PATTERN
Want to move on from hats and scarves but intimidated by sweaters? An easy top-down shrug is perfect for learning all the skills you need to knit a sweater without the commitment. Lace, cables, and different stitch patterns can all be incorporated into this quick-knit design. Materials required: approximately 500 yards of worsted weight yarn, 5mm circular needles.
MILKWEED SHAWL
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU

FRIDAYS, JUNE 18 & 25
COST: $47 INCLUDES PATTERN (students must bring or buy 350 yards of fingering weight yarn and 3.75 mm circular needles)
The Milkweed Shawl is a great first lace pattern – perfect for learning how to read a chart and work increases and decreases! This little shawl knits up quickly with just a little bit of yarn. A satisfying and fun summer project.
CROCHET A GRANNY SQUARE
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS TOTAL
SUNDAY, MAY 30, 10-NOON
COST: $20
The granny square is a classic crochet project that can become anything from a coaster to a blanket, just use your imagination! No crochet experience necessary, but it’s also a great ‘next step’ projecct for beginner crocheters as well. Bring some worsted weight yarn and a 5mm crochet hook.
CROCHET 102: HEXAGON AFGHAN HOW-TO

Your Great Grandmas ‘Ghan by Katherine Eng is a fun new (old) pattern in this month’s Crochet Today. It’s a great second crochet project that will help teach you how to follow a pattern. Eye catching and fun in lots of colours or just a few. Bring some of your yarn and we’ll work through a hexagon block together. Make just one for a potholder if the idea of an afghan intimidates you, but you might find it’s hard to stop with just one!
