Upcoming Classes – Autumn 2009
NEW this season – sock classes including my book, “Teach Yourself Visually Sock Knitting”!
LEARN TO KNIT A HAT
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU OR KATE ATHERLEY
2 LESSONS, 4 HOURS TOTAL
FRIDAYS, SEPTEMBER 18 & 25, 6-8PM OR MONDAYS, DECEMBER 14 & 21, 6-8PM
COST: $80 INCLUDES MATERIALS (includes one skein of wool, one printed pattern, one bamboo circular needle, and one set of bamboo double pointed needles)
Ready to branch out from rectangles? In this class you will learn how to knit with circular needles and double pointed needles, how to decrease stitches, and how to follow a pattern. A great project to have in your knitting repetoire!
FAIR ISLE HAT
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU
2 LESSONS, 4 HOURS TOTAL
FRIDAYS, OCTOBER 23 & 30, 6-8PM
COST: $40 (students must bring or purchase 2 colours worsted weight wool, 5 mm circular needles and 5mm double pointed needles)
Time to tackle stranded knitting! Learn the basics of two-colour stranded knitting (“fair isle”) with a sampler hat knit in the round. Two-handed and one- handed techniques will be covered, as well as weaving vs. floats and following a colourwork chart. See fabulous patterns emerge before your eyes! Skills required: cast on, knit, purl, cast off. Previous colourwork experience not needed, but knitting in the round is an asset!
LEARN CONTINENTAL KNITTING
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS TOTAL
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 6-8PM OR
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 6-8PM
COST: $20 PLUS MATERIALS (yarn and needles of students choice – worsted weight is suggested)
Want to learn to knit faster? Continental knitting is the way to go! This method involves holding the yarn in your left hand and “picking” the yarn instead of “throwing” it. Make a scarf or something more ambitious, if you’re up to the challenge or have something specific in mind. Some knowledge of knitting and purling is strongly encouraged but not essential.
TOE-UP MAGIC LOOP SOCKS
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU
2 LESSONS, 4 HOURS TOTAL
FRIDAYS, SEPTEMBER 4 & 11, 6-8PM OR FRIDAYS, NOVEMBER 6 & 13, 6-8PM OR FRIDAYS, DECEMBER 11 & 18, 6-8PM
COST: $60 includes a 2.5 mm 32″ Addi Lace needle. Students must buy 350 yards fingering weight yarn.
Magic loop is a method for knitting small circumferences in the round using just one long circular needle. Working your socks toe-up is a great way to check fit and use up all your yarn – no leftovers! These toe up socks will employ the Easy Toe and Short Row Heel.
LEARN SHORT ROWS – JUST ENOUGH RUFFLES SCARF
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA CHAU
2 LESSONS, 4 HOURS TOTAL
FRIDAYS, NOVEMBER 20 & 27, 6-8PM
COST: $42 includes printed pattern (materials to bring or buy: 400 yards worsted weight, 5.5 mm 32″ or 36″ circular needles)
Knit the Just Enough Ruffles Scarf by Laura Chau! This popular pattern incorporates knitting short rows for shaping as well as increases for the ruffle. Knit it in super soft Malabrigo merino worsted, or any worsted weight yarn that you like! You should know how to cast on, knit, purl, and cast off.
